Recent Guests, Grant, and An Ongoing Professional Exchange

May 2019

Israel Elwyn has had the pleasure of hosting several visits in recent months:

Stephen Simon, Executive Director, Department on Disability, City of Los Angeles – Stephen visited IE last week, first meeting with David Marcu, IE’s CEO, for an introduction to all our programs.  Together with IE staff members, he then visited IE programs in the field of

employment in the competitive job market, which most interests him.  At Hadassah Medical Center – Ein Kerem, Stephen saw the training program in action, spoke with a woman working at a popular restaurant who receives on the job support services from IE’s Supported Employment, and met with two of IE’s work group service recipients employed at the YMCA’s Sports Center and Hotel.

Reena Foundation (Toronto, Canada) – A group of Reena staff and service recipients, as well as their partner organizations, heard about all of IE’s programs from an IE staff member during a visit ot IE’s Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Retiree Center and Jerusalem Early Intervention Center in February.  Reena is a non-profit organization which “promotes dignity, individuality, independence, personal growth and community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities within a framework of Jewish culture and values.”

Bnai Zion Foundation – Cheryl Bier, the Foundation’s CEO, is a frequent visitor to our Supported Living Services programs, which Bnai Zion has supported for decades.

Cheryl was here in February and then again earlier this month, when she was accompanied by Bnai Zion donors Amy and Wayne Gould.  Rebecca Harary, the Foundation’s Senior Vice President, made a return visit to Israel Elwyn at the beginning of April, when she brought a group of journalists to hear about and see our programs.

GRANT

Israel Elwyn has received an important grant this month:

Jewish Federation of Broward County – This will be used in the coming year to implement the principles of IE’s Self-Advocacy Project in seven of its retiree centers throughout the country.  This is not the first time the Federation has supported an IE program and we appreciate their support.

PROFESSIONAL EXCHANGE

Over 15 years ago, Israel Elwyn (IE) and JEVS Human Services created a professional exchange fellowship with the generous funding of the Samuel P. Mandell Foundation (Philadelphia).  The project is intended to create a flow of knowledge and establish contacts in joint fields of endeavor.

Every year, a JEVS professional and a professional from outside the agency travel to Israel for a week of intensive immersion in the Israeli social services system, and particularly Israel Elwyn's programs throughout the country.  In the same year, an IE professional and a professional from outside the agency travel to Philadelphia to learn about programs operated by JEVS and other organizations.

Earlier this month, Jay Spector, CEO of JEVS Human Services (Philadelphia, PA) gave a warm welcome to Israel Elwyn’s Keren Strul (Director – Haifa & Northern Israel Branch) and Racheli Fruchter (Director – Job Placement, Sharon & Central Israel Branch), who were joined by David Marcu (IE CEO), who was also in Philadelphia.  Upon returning to Israel, Keren and Racheli commented that they were amazed by the overall learning experience, their new acquaintance with people from a range of programs, and the comparisons between Philadelphia and Israel.

At the moment, Israel Elwyn is preparing for the reciprocal visit of two professionals from the Philadelphia area – one from JEVS and the other from an external agency – during the summer.
