For several years, students from the Technion's Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine have been coming to Israel Elwyn's (IE) Haifa & Northern Israel Branch as part of a course introducing them to the medical system in Israel.  The visits provide the students with insight into the world of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the service provided by IE.

The students visit IE's Stein Early Intervention Center (children 6 months to 3 years of age), Hosen Adult Day Center and Beresin Occupational Training Center.  At each location they speak with service recipients, family members and IE staff, gaining exposure to their thoughts, expectations, experiences and challenges in society in general and particularly with medical issues.

The students have said that becoming acquainted with the world of disability and individual needs left them feeling the responsibility they bear in providing adapted, personal and professional service.

The senior medical staff overseeing the project testify to the fact that these meetings have an ongoing influence on the students as they become qualified and sensitive professionals with a greater awareness of the human being with a disability and the family surrounding them.

IE recently received the Miriam Ben-Haim prize for 2015 from the Technion in recognition of its work with the students.  Born in Iraq in 1925, Ms. Ben-Haim trained as a nurse and later made Aliya to Israel, where she worked as a midwife in a refugee camp near Haifa.  She retired from nursing in 1989.  She deeply believes in helping others, even to the point of self-sacrifice, and has received numerous prizes for her selfless work.  The Miriam Ben-Haim prize, awarded annually by the Ben-Haim family, symbolizes social involvement, caring and commitment to teaching.

Israel Elwyn's Jerusalem & Southern Israel Branch has for several years hosted second year medical students from Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center – Ein Kerem who are taking a course called "Man and Medicine."  During a visit to Israel Elwyn's main site in Jerusalem, the students are introduced to the world of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
