Established early in 1984, Israel Elwyn (IE) began with just a handful of employees as a pilot employment project for 80 persons with intellectual disability at the initiative of Jerusalem’s famous mayor, the late Teddy Kollek, and the Ministry of Social Services in collaboration with the American nonprofit, Elwyn Inc.  Today, IE’s over 1,100 professional employees provide support services to over 4,500 individuals of all ages with a wide range of disabilities around Israel.

IE’s management saw the start of the organization’s 35th anniversary as an opportunity to recognize the notable impact our programs have on the lives of thousands of individuals and to thank staff while giving them the rare chance to celebrate together.  After considerable organizational effort, including the creation of a special logo for the 35th year, some 700 staff members, retired staff, volunteers and residents of IE’s Community Residential Services gathered at an events hall on Thursday, December 6, to kick off what will certainly be a memorable year.

David Marcu (CEO)

The 35th year logo was greeted with cheers, and David Marcu, IE’s CEO, presented an update to the Vision made in the last year.  IE’s vision foresees a society in which people with disabilities will be citizens with equal rights; a society in which we all aspire to determine our own future and way of life. Our mission is to develop and provide a wide array of supports, means of accessibility and tools for people with disabilities, while constantly striving for excellence of service and the creation of a just society. Together with people with disabilities and society at large, we will continue working as an innovative and cutting-edge organization.  The new addition adds several clarifications on the subject of accessibility, which embraces much more than just physical access.

Israel Elwyn Theater Group

During the evening, Israel Elwyn’s Theater Group, which is comprised of residents of IE’s Community Residential Services, presented an exciting performance dealing with the routine of their lives.  They were directed by renowned Israeli actress, comedian and director Rina Padwa.  The group rehearses at the Israel Museum, which has been home to the group since its inception almost 15 years ago, with the Museum’s galleries providing the actors with inspiration for their rehearsals and productions.

Singer Moran Mazuz, rendering a series of popular songs, was well received by the audience.  She was followed by the famous band Tipex (Teapacks), whose performance had the entire audience singing and dancing for 90 minutes and reluctant to let them step down from the stage.

The evening ended, but our 35th year is just beginning and we look forward to the next chapter in Israel Elwyn’s life!
