Socially Responsible Workplace Has Room for Everyone

October 2016

Of Tov worker with IE support staff at fair held during the company's Social Responsibility Day
A group of five workers with disabilities, who receive support services from Israel Elwyn (IE), is employed by Of Tov, a leading local processor of chicken and turkey products with a production plant in the Beit She'an industrial zone in northern Israel.  Upon being employed by Of Tov, they were received with warmth and love by the company's workers and management.  They work in the cafeteria and in various production departments, including packaging the products that will be sold in grocery stores and supermarkets.  The workers enjoy full employer-employee relations with the company.  Along with the other employees, they are active participants in Of Tov's social activities.

Recently, Of Tov held a Social Responsibility Day to promote mutual relations with local residents, in order to encourage involvement in the community on social and environmental issues by Jews and Arabs in the area.  The Of Tov workers with disabilities participated in a fair held as part of the day, selling a range of products made by service recipients in other IE programs:  the Hosen Adult Day Center and the Beresin Occupational Training Center.

Of Tov began collaborating with IE on the employment of workers with disabilities over three years ago.  Some of the workers began their vocational careers in a group environment with close, daily support by an IE job coach; all eagerly awaited the day they could advance to employment in the competitive job market as part of IE's Supported Employment Program.  Today, they are visited just once or twice a week by the job coach and are proud of their accomplishments.

Since the inception of IE's Supported Employment program, thousands of individuals with disabilities have joined the competitive job market in innumerable workplaces throughout Israel.  As part of the program, IE staff work with the employees with disabilities to help them adjust and adapt to the workplace and the demands of their job.  In addition, training is provided for employers to help them and their staff prepare for working with employees with disabilities. including familiarization with the world of the person with disabilities; instruction and assistance in how to assess the work station of the person with disabilities within the workplace; assistance in applying to the Ministry of Economy to receive physical adaptations for the person with disabilities, as needed; assistance in understanding and acting in accordance with the relevant labor laws – both the responsibilities and the rights of the person with disabilities; and training in the various stages of employ a person with disabilities required to ensure the worker’s success.

In recent years, Israel Elwyn's Supported Employment program has been expanded with the support of the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles.
