Broward County Donors See Results of Generosity

October 2015

An exterior view of Israel Elwyn’s unique Weinberg Retiree Center in Jerusalem

The Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Broward County, Florida, contributed to the building of Israel Elwyn’s unique Weinberg Retiree Center in Jerusalem.  Since construction began in 2011 and was completed in 2014, small delegations from Broward County have visited the Center and even participated in the festive dedication on July 11, 2014.

Examples of the Retirees' Artistic Efforts at the Center

On October 22, a 140-strong delegation from the Broward County Jewish Federation had the opportunity to learn about Israel Elwyn’s retiree program, among others, and to view the crafts created by the retired workers at Israel Elwyn’s Weinberg Retiree Center at an exhibition in Jerusalem.  The retirees, who continue to enjoy a vocational program along with therapeutic and recreational activities, enjoy selling their work and using the income to finance leisure time at coffee shops, museums and other attractions.

Since the Weinberg Center opened, the retirees have been able to pick and choose from a range of activities – including computer instruction, arts and crafts, horticulture, music, sports, movies and discussion groups.  The Weinberg Retiree Center is the first such center built in Israel especially for adults with disabilities.  The planning of the building’s layout capitalized on the abundant light and fresh air in this residential neighborhood, as well as being adapted to the needs of the seniors and giving them optimal access to the building and its landscaped environs.
