Israel's UN Ambassador Looks to Replicate Knesset Program for Employment of People with Disabilities

August 2016

In May 2008, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an international convention (treaty) to help eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities. As of July 2016, the convention had 160 signatories and 166 parties, including Israel among 165 states and the European Union. One of the subjects covered in the convention is employment in the community for people with disabilities.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, was a member of the Knesset for seven years, during which time he – like every other Knesset member – came into contact with Knesset employees with disabilities on a daily basis. Danon recently proposed that the United Nations adapt the successful model used by the Knesset to employ individuals with disability, mentioning Israel Elwyn's (IE) role as a provider of support services for these employees.

The Knesset has been employing workers with disabilities as part of its workforce for over a decade.  Since 2008, IE has been providing support services as part of its cooperation with the Knesset. The employees are directly employed by the Knesset in various departments, including as assistant secretaries, ushers, messengers and in its post office branch.

Several Knesset employees with disabilities who receive support services from Israel Elwyn are featured in IE’s film which can be accessed by clicking here
