National Disability Employment Awareness month in the U.S.

October 2019

October is National Disability Employment Awareness month in the U.S. - it is a time to celebrate the diversity that disability brings to our workforce.

Israel Elwyn’s vision is to achieve a society in which people with disabilities will be citizens with equal rights; a society in which we all aspire to determine our own future and way of life.

American Friends of Israel Elwyn (AFIE) supports the programs and services of Israel Elwyn. You can help create a society in which people with disabilities will be citizens with equal rights; a society in which we all aspire to determine our own future and way of life.

Israel Elwyn (IE) is involved for 35 years in developing Supported Employment Programs for youth, young adults and adults with disability:

Over 1500 high school students participate in IE’s Transitional Programs, providingthem with practical work experience in a wide range of employment settings in the community; acquiring a reservoir of skills from which to create a personal future orientation; allowing students to investigate the opportunities and possibilities awaiting them upon graduation, including military service, national service, and academic studies.

  • 370 young adults with disabilities ages 18-24 who are exempt from military service participate in The Mosaic Program – National Service for All, which enables them to join the National Service program and contribute to Israeli society as do their peers.  Participants receive unique supports and training days covering a range of subjects with the aim of preparing them for the day they complete their service.

  • 200 young adults participate in IE’s vocational training, acquiring a gainful profession.

  • We support over 1,300 people with disability in IE’s Job Placement Services, providing on-the-job supports in the competitive job market and help find meaningful jobs for individuals with disabilities, removing barriers to inclusion in the workforce.

  • IE work with over 2,700 employers in the competitive job market who hire people with disability in areas such as factories, restaurants, government offices, kindergartens, stores, etc.

Israel Elwyn is a member of professional forums promoting government policy and legislation which encourages the inclusion of people with disability in the competitive job market.
