Acting Out: An Evening of Improv

May 2018

On March 28, 2018, the Theater Group of Israel Elwyn’s Community Residential Services presented an evening of theater at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.  Noa Anikster Cohen’s film, “I Only Wish” (Halevai Alai), in which she speaks of her personal connection to the world of disability and the actors speak of their self-image, was screened, followed by improvisations by the actors.  Rina Padwa and Gilad Cohen, both recognized director-producers in Israeli theater, led the evening with the assistance of Yael Cohen (a volunteer) and Ido Hadar (sound).  The participants agreed that the evening had been both interesting and enjoyable.

The actors, most of whom live in apartments in IE’s Community Residential Services, have been working together for many years.  Initially, they participated in a drama class established especially for them by Padwa, who is also a renowned actress-comedian, and the Israel Museum as part of the Youth Wing’s Art Classes, but after a period of working together the group decided that they also wanted to perform in front of audiences.  The troupe’s introductory production, I Am Inspired, was first produced in 2005 and since then has been shown in various venues.  This was followed in 2014 by Love Without Limits, a show dealing with the actors’ dreams of finding love, marrying, establishing homes and having children, which gave them a chance to share their feelings with the public through song, dance and prose.
