IE Reading Group Visits Western Wall

August 2018

Early in July, the reading circle from Beit Tal (in Israel Elwyn’s Supported Living Services in Jerusalem) visited the Western Wall at the initiative of the group’s members.

Prior to the visit, the 12 members of the group learned about the Wall and Jerusalem’s Old City, and prepared notes to leave in the spaces between the Wall’s stones, as is customary.  They said the notes expressed their prayers for themselves and their families, and that they wished for health, a long life and joy for themselves and their friends.

During the visit, they deposited their notes and some lay tefillin (donned phylacteries – a set of small black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah) or read Psalms.  They sang Israeli musician and songwriter Naomi Shemer’s famous Jerusalem of Gold to wind up the visit.

The reading group’s members excitedly expressed satisfaction with the trip and are already planning their next outing.

The circle meets each week to read and learn about a range of subjects, such as the people for whom Israeli streets are named, different communities in Israel and their culture, food, etc.
