Let's Meet Over a Cup of Coffee at the Weinberg Retiree Center

March 2017

Several years ago, Israel Elwyn opened the Weinberg Retiree Center in Kiryat HaYovel, in Jerusalem, for adults with intellectual and other disabilities who wished to retire or curtail their working hours, mostly in the competitive job market.  Today, the center is at full capacity, providing in house services to 50 retirees. In addition to providing them with a place to meet peers, the center helps them maintain existing skills and capabilities and expand their interest in new fields.  The therapies and classes in sport, computer, the arts and other fields are chosen by the seniors themselves.

At the end of November, the center opened its Golden Age Coffee Shop.  This social enterprise will serve the residents of the area and elsewhere, and encourage interaction between its customers and the Center's retirees.  Service is provided by students from the Ein Kerem Agricultural high school, as part of their tenth grade "personal commitment" or twelfth grade final project.  The Coffee Shop is open every Monday afternoon – everyone's invited!
