"Love Without Limits" A Smashing Success

An audience of families, friends and Israel Elwyn employees had the opportunity this month to attend the premier of a new show inspired and performed by actors with disabilities in IE’s theater troupe.  Called Love Without Limits, the show deals with the actors’ dreams of finding love, marrying, establishing a home and having children, and gives them a chance to share their feelings with the public through song, dance and prose.

The thirteen actors, twelve of whom live in apartments in IE’s Community Residential Services, have been working together for many years.  Over a decade ago, they participated in a drama class initiated especially for them by renowned Israeli actress-comedian-producer Rina Padwa and the Israel Museum as part of the Youth Wing’s Art Classes, but after a period of working together the group decided that they also wanted to perform in front of audiences.  The troupe’s introductory production, I Am Inspired, was first presented in 2005 and since then has been shown in various venues.

The Israel Museum has continued to provide the players with free rehearsal and theater space, and the actors frequently search the Museum’s exhibits for inspiration.  Eldad Shaltiel, Senior Curator of Art Courses for the Museum, feels that “the actors’ greatest strength lies in their authenticity; although they learn lines, they are still playing themselves.  Their expression of what all humans feel is very moving:  we all want the security that comes from love and joining with others in a family unit.  The Museum and particularly the Youth Wing is like a home for them.”

Work on Love Without Limits began two years ago, starting with a process of searching for a subject, the actors’ expressing thoughts and desires relating to the chosen topic, and the distillation of these thoughts and desires into a production by Rina, whose own performances and productions are based on real life experiences and ambitions.  She feels that the group’s productions are “a sort of reality on the stage – as opposed to reality TV – that breaks down stigmas and causes the audience to get to know the capabilities, joy and aspirations of people with disabilities.  "In my entire career I’ve never met a more special group of people.  They display independence in their opinions, and let nothing get in the way of the work they do on stage.”  Rina believes that participation in the theater group gives the actors confidence and self-esteem, in addition to a rare opportunity to enter the world of the Museum from a unique perspective.

For the production of Love Without Limits Rina was joined by top Israeli professionals and volunteers who worked on costumes, animation, sound, makeup, movement and acting.

David Marcu, IE’s CEO, commented that “This show is a vehicle for the actors’ expression of their feelings in terms that are significant to them and is another step on the path to realization of the organization's vision.”

At the end of the Love Without Limits performance, the audience gave the actors a standing ovation, and many look forward to seeing the show again.
