Partnership with Dan Hotels Chain Continues

Students from IE's Transition program attend a presentation at the Dan Hotel

Israel Elwyn (IE) and the Dan Hotels chain have been partners since 2010 in providing employment for adults with disabilities through IE’s Supported Employment program.  Since its inception, our relationship has expanded to include other types of work together.  In Jerusalem, over the past years, the Dan Hotel has invited IE workers with disabilities to decorate the hotel's succah; hosted residents of IE’s Community Supported Living Services; made presentations for participants in Israel Elwyn’s professional exchange programs; and invited high school students with disabilities from IE’s Transitions program to learn about hotels as sources of employment. (Learn about IE’s Transitions program below.)

Students from IE’s Transitions program from high schools in Tel Aviv and Holon recently visited the Dan Accadia Hotel in Herzliya.  Their visit began with an orientation on the hotel and the range of professions available within the hotel’s operations.  The students then toured the hotel’s departments and met with employees, who explained their jobs and responsibilities.

The students were attentive throughout their visit, asking questions about what they saw and listening intently to the explanations.  Yossi was very interested in the possibility of working in a hotel following his graduation and inquired extensively about the qualifications required for hiring, working hours, wages and opportunities for advancement.  Eli remarked that he has been a hotel guest, but had been unfamiliar with the “back of the house” functions that keep a hotel running smoothly.  Yael was impressed by the range of jobs available within the hotel’s complex structure of management, middle management and various departments.

At present over 20 individuals with disabilities are employed at Dan Hotels in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ashkelon and Herzliya with the support of Israel Elwyn’s job coaches, and the cooperation between IE and the Dan chain continues to grow and flourish.

* Israel Elwyn’s Transitions program helps high school students with disabilities prepare for their transition to adulthood and the choices they face upon graduation.  During the years that the teens participate in the Transitions program, they receive instruction in the skills they will need to navigate the adult world.  These students are also exposed to the opportunities from which they will be able to choose:  military or national service, further education or training, and employment.  Hotels, being a microcosm of the working world, offer a wide range of employment experiences:  clerical, service, culinary, maintenance, managerial, etc.
