Looking Good: Cosmetics Packaged at Israel Elwyn’s Sabbah Center

Workers at Sabbah Center preparing cosmetics for shipping

The workers with disabilities at Israel Elwyn’s Sabbah Occupational Training Center are proud of their work and enjoy seeing the “fruits of their labor” in local restaurants and stores, at international fairs and even at the Maccabiah held in Jerusalem last summer. Over the past year, they have been involved in another long term project:  packaging jars and tubes of beauty creams destined for women in Israel and in Africa.

Their work involves creating boxes with inserts from flat kits that we receive from the printer, placing the products in their individual boxes and closing them, boxing the packaged creams and then gathering the boxed goods on pallets for shipment.  Initially, neither the manufacturer nor the staff at Israel Elwyn (IE) were sure if the workers would enjoy the work and could maintain the required level of precision and the sterile environment.  But as happens time and time again, when new tasks are presented, the workers prove their ability to learn new skills and accomplish more sophisticated tasks.

Asked about the work, Yael said:  “It’s difficult.  I have to concentrate so that I fold the box corners and lids exactly on the indicated lines, but I like the challenge.”  Eli proudly shows how carefully he performs quality control for each finished box before placing it in a carton:  “See, it has to be just so.”

On an inspection tour, the manufacturer was amazed at the level of precision and how clean and organized the workers kept the work space. He assured the workers that their production was top notch and thanked them for their efforts.
