IE Gets in the Game...Maccabiah Games

This year, the workers with disabilities in Israel Elwyn’s (IE) Sabbah Occupational Training Center (OTC) in Jerusalem were excited to be among those helping to prepare for the 19th Maccabiah Games, which were held in Jerusalem from July 17 through 30.

The workers were given the task of preparing three different types of gift kits for the fans, athletes and foreign visitors.  A total of 40,000 bags displaying the 2013 Maccabiah Games logo were stuffed with Israeli flags, programs, glow sticks and other treats.

Not unlike the athletes, the workers strove to finish the work in record time – and succeeded in finishing the job much faster than expected.  They understood the significance of the kits they were preparing and discussed how recipients of the kits would enjoy opening them and discovering their contents.  The workers also enjoyed the work, saying that it was refreshing to do something new and different from their regular work.

The Maccabiah Games were first held in 1932 in Tel Aviv, when 400 athletes from 18 countries participated, including from Syria and Egypt. The Games have been held every four years since then, aside from a gap due to the Second World War and then the establishment of the State of Israel.  This year, 9,000 athletes from 70 countries participated.  Israel Elwyn is proud to have been a part of this international Jewish event.
