Learning Computer Skills Leads to Good Jobs

Computer literacy is a critical skill in the modern job market.  To ensure that people with disabilities who enter the competitive workforce are in a position to take advantage of all potential employment opportunities, Israel Elwyn’s Academy for Training, Support & Guidance initiated a course in job-oriented computer skills for people with intellectual disabilities earlier this year.

The two-part course consists of 75 hours of beginner instruction, followed by 45 hours of advanced operations.  In addition to enabling people with disabilities to acquire skills that offer access to varied, quality employment with a good salary, course participants also were left with a feeling of self-fulfillment regarding their ability to successfully meet complex challenges.  The course material was made cognitively accessible to the participants by an instructor and assistant instructor with the support of a team from IE’s Academy.

Twenty people with disabilities who receive services from IE recently completed the first series of the course in Haifa and Jerusalem.

A heart-felt speech was given by Ilanit, 31, who has been diagnosed with complex learning disabilities.  She receives employment support services from IE and will shortly begin working in the community.  Here are some of her remarks:

  • “I wanted to thank Irena (instructor) and Muhanad (assistant instructor) for their help, which contributed a lot towards my learning and understanding, and to my understanding of the information from a lot of websites.”
  • “…Creating tables requires a lot of effort and thought for me.  It was difficult at first, in the early sessions, but I overcame them.  I think I learned a lot in the computer course.  I’m very pleased with my progress in the course.”
  • “There are a lot of things I didn’t know.  I only knew small things, like songs and Google.  Today I know the computer (Office) programs themselves.  I’m very proud of my progress in the course.  And I would like to further develop my thoughts on the computer and to continue the computer course.”
  • “This has taught me that if I begin to work in the community and my supervisor says she wants me to prepare a list, I’ll know what to do.  Again, I owe thanks to Irena and Muhanad for their help and support and am grateful that they didn’t give up on me and that I learned many important, special things from them.  I’m only sorry that the (first half of the) course is ending.”

Israel Elwyn was able to offer this course thanks to the generous support of Bezeq in the Community (Bezeq is one of Israel’s largest communications providers) and the Alfred and Gertrude Bernays-Richard Foundation.
