IE Workers Support Israeli Economy

October 2015

IE supported workers at the Sabbah OTC preparing Chanukkah packages

Each year, the workers with disabilities at Israel Elwyn’s (IE) Sabbah Occupational Training Center in Jerusalem perform a wide range of jobs for their customers.  For the Education Ministry, they prepare mailings of educational and administrative material to be sent to school principals, counselors and teachers throughout the country.  For the Aroma Espresso Bar Israel chain, they package disposable cutlery, napkins and seasonings in the bags that accompany diners’ takeout orders.  Wrapped candies, cosmetics, games, labelling of various products, items related to holidays, and maps are among the other products they have processed.  In 2013, they stuffed – in record time – 40,000 bags displaying the 2013 Maccabiah Games logo with Israeli flags, programs, glow sticks and other treats for distribution to the athletes and spectators.  The Sabbah Center’s newest venture is a dedicated sugar and spice packaging plant.

Some of the Center’s workers have already begun working on a major project that will help Israelis celebrate Chanukkah:  packaging boxes of 44 wicks in plastic holders for those who like to burn oil, rather than candles, in their Chanukkiah (Chanukkah Menorah).  By the time the holiday arrives, these diligent workers will have prepared about 20,000 such boxes.

In addition to providing quality service to paying customers, the workers at Sabbah OTC and other IE training centers are also preparing for employment in the competitive job market.  Each individual has a personalized progress plan, created together with the OTC’s professionals and based on each person’s employment ambitions, desires and abilities.  Following their training at the Sabbah OTC and Israel Elwyn’s other training centers, workers may find employment in one of an array of jobs in both the private and public sector.  The jobs filled over the years by workers with disabilities, with supports from Israel Elwyn, include clerical, administrative, and technical positions, in government, manufacturing, hospitality, restaurants, bakeries, high tech, retail, and more.
