Not Our Bubbie's Tea: Revisiting a Tradition

November 2015

Tea sommelier Carol Mark

Earlier this month, Canadian Friends of Israel Elwyn (CFIE), a Canadian national charitable organization that develops and promotes awareness of, leadership in, and financial support for Israel Elwyn, hosted a fundraiser for Israel Elwyn.  The event, called, "Re-Generating Afternoon Tea with CFIE," featured certified tea sommelier Carol Mark and took place at the Holland Bloorview Conference Centre in Toronto.

Carol spoke about topics related to tea, including: health benefits, ethically grown and processed teas, and kosher tea, as well as demonstrating the best way to prepare teas and a few original refreshments.  Carol related the historic significance of tea to justice and the Jewish people, noting that in 19th century North America, "women could only legally gather together to work on women's rights issues at teatime.  In fact, the traditional tea events held by Jewish women’s social groups had the same aims.  They would fundraise for special causes.  I feel like I’m continuing the tradition of women’s political involvement and social change.”  Click here to see article about this event in the Canadian Jewish News.
