Accessibility symbols from the booklet and poster for service recipients

Israel Elwyn's vision foresees a society in which people with disabilities will be citizens with equal rights; a society in which we all aspire to determine our own future and way of life.

Accessibility of various types is critical for the inclusion of people with disabilities in society, and IE seeks out ways to make our services and resources accessible for service recipients.

Recently, staff from Israel Elwyn's Jerusalem & Southern Israel Branch completed a comprehensive course on cognitive accessibility, which took place at IE's Academy for Continuing Education.  Teaching the course were Dr. Oranit Avidan Ziv, Director of The Israeli Institute on Cognitive Accessibility (Ami Association and Ono Academic College) and staff from the Institute, and Dr. Sigal Uziel-Karl, an expert in cognitive accessibility.

Participants learned about Israel's accessibility regulations and statute, were exposed to legislation in the field of equal rights, cognitive accessibility and process accessibility, graphic design and symbols, ethics, creators' rights, and spoken language, among others.

Participants presented personal projects on accessibility for persons with intellectual disability at the course commencement.

We also believed that it was important to make a written version of our Vision, Mission and Guiding Values accessible for all our service recipients.  An accessible explanatory booklet and poster were prepared by a team comprising service recipients, their parents, social services professionals and IE's professional teams, with the assistance of The Israeli Institute on Cognitive Accessibility.

IE's Guiding Values are:  A Just Society, Belief in People, Self Representation, Communication, Professionalism, Openness, and A Learning Organization.
