“Reshet” Students Celebrate Hanukkah with Young Hospital Patients

High school students visit children hospitalized at the Barzilai Medical Center's Pediatric Department during Hanukkah

Being hospitalized during the holidays can be particularly difficult for children, who generally count the days until each school vacation and await the chance to play endlessly, forgetting about lessons and homework. The high school students in Israel Elwyn’s (IE) “Reshet” (network in Hebrew) program decided to take advantage of a day of their Hanukkah vacation to brighten the day for children in the Barzilai Medical Center Pediatric Department in Ashkelon. They organized a visit to the hospital by contacting the hospital's management. On the day of their visit, they distributed sufganiot (traditional jelly-filled doughnuts) and homemade holiday greeting cards to the children.

The head of the Pediatric Department also showed the teens what goes on behind the scenes of the Department’s day to day workings and in times of emergency, giving them a glimpse into the wide range of employment opportunities that exist in a hospital.

The teens from Reshet said that seeing smiles on the faces of the children in the Pediatric Department more than compensated them for the time taken out from their own school vacation.

IE’s Reshet program is for teenagers with physical and sensory disabilities and diminished cognitive skills who are students in the regular, non-special education system.  This extracurricular program aims to prepare 16-to-18-year olds for independence while providing them with a broad range of experiences and extensive exposure to opportunities in the post-high school world – military or national service, employment, and continuing education, as well as interaction with the community.  Reshet’s activities provide the participants with the tools to make knowledgeable choices about their future.

Our partners in the program are the National Insurance Institute, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services, the Ministry of Education, and Ashalim-Joint Israel.
