Telling My Story

December 2012

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

There's an old saying: your only true possessions are your memories. It's also true that our memories of the past shape our present, but what about the memories of an individual who is unable to express himself and share his memories with others? They are still his possessions, but the loneliness of untold stories is difficult to bear.

About two years ago, Israel Elwyn's Supported Living Centers established an exciting project to share these untold stories. Below are details from the culmination of this initiative.

Telling My Story: Residents Use Computers for Self Expression

Woman Tells Her Story Man Tells His Story

IE residents appearing in front of computer-based presentations of their life histories.

Residents of the Centers, with the help of their families and two staff members, began preparing presentations that tell their stories as children and as siblings, from the ashes of European and North African Jewry and through the wars that have plagued our region. The presentations show photos of the residents' childhood home towns and of their parents and siblings through the years, but particularly focus on the story of each resident's life.

In September, the residents' families were invited to a screening of the residents' presentations together with IE's management and guests. The three residents who had prepared individual presentations were visibly excited and full of pride as they took the stage to present their stories to the audience.

During Pinchas' presentation, a film shows him hearing the song A Yiddeshe Mama and recalling his mother and the songs she used to sing to him. Vic, who has severe intellectual disabilities, was present while his sister worked on the presentation, but still was moved to call out to his late parents when he saw them on the screen. The audience shared their excitement, both laughing and crying with the residents as they told the story of their lives.

In watching the presentations, the members of the audience were reminded that each human being is a world in and of itself and how sharing memories brings true joy.
