The Name of the Game - Ensuring Rights

November 2017

Twenty people – including people with disability, social activists, volunteers and employees of the National Insurance Institute (Israel’s Social Security Administration) – graduated in mid-November from a unique course in which they learned how to help Israelis with disabilities implement the rights accorded them by law.

The course was the result of collaboration between Israel Elwyn (IE), Haifa University and its flagship project for combating social exclusion, the Haifa Municipality’s Social Services Department of Rehabilitation, and the National Insurance Institute (NII).  Participants, families and representatives of the collaborating organizations gathered for the graduation ceremony at IE’s Family Center, located in Israel Elwyn’s Early Intervention Center in Haifa.

Students of the course acquired expertise on the rights of people with all types of disabilities.  The subject matter included academic background and relevant knowledge along with practical tools.  Each participant also completed a project on making services accessible and in actualizing the rights of people with disability.

The 11-session course was comprised of 59 classroom hours, which incorporated lectures by Haifa University academic staff as well as workshops on relevant skills by experts from the NII, IE and the Haifa Municipality, along with tours and field studies.

Following completion of this course, Haifa residents with disability who approach the Haifa Municipality’s Social Services Department, NII or IE’s Haifa & Northern Israel Branch will be put in touch with a coordinator for help in understanding and accessing their rights.

The graduation ceremony was photographed by service recipients from Israel Elwyn’s Albert Beresin Occupational Training Center, who have been studying photography at the Center for the past two years.
