College Study Leads to Child’s Play

August 2017

For the past year, Israel Elwyn’s Carmiel Early Intervention Center (EIC) was a learning laboratory for students at the ORT Braude Academic College of Engineering.  Through a collaboration between Israel Elwyn (IE) and the college, students in Orit Braun’s Rehabilitative Biomechanics course gained first-hand experience with the learning patterns of children with autism. The collaboration was initiated by the EIC’s occupational therapist, Romi Merienberg.

For some of the college students, this was their first close contact with children with disability. Throughout the course of the year, they learned about the needs of toddlers with autism and gained experience in adapting games and the play environment to the children's abilities and needs.

In consultation with the EIC’s staff and their lecturer, the students focused on three projects.  The first was a "senses barrel," in which they added touch, light and sound elements to a standard play barrel for children to cavort in and crawl through.  The second was an interactive "magical closet" where games are stored.  The design of the closet’s doors allows the children to demonstrate their motivation in selecting a game.  The third was a "balance track," which combines elements of movement and balance when a child moves from section to section during play. The projects were installed and presented in the presence of Dr. Michal Wilf, Director of Israel Elwyn’s Haifa & Northern Israel Branch, and Orit Braun.

Israel Elwyn takes great pride in its role of helping to train the next generation of rehabilitation professionals.  Its appreciation for the college students was expressed in the personal gifts each received from IE at the end of the course along with certificates and scholarships they received from the College.

And the children? Once they were given the go ahead, they did what comes naturally – playing happily with the newly installed games.
