Celebrating International Women's Day

In June, the workers and staff of the Adult Day Center in Israel Elwyn’s Ra’anana Occupational Training Center celebrated International Women’s Day.  Over several days, the women and men of the group participated in a range of activities that introduced them to the concept of women’s rights and this issue’s influence on all individuals (regardless of their gender), on the family and society.

Learning About Influential Women in History: In their first activity, each participant chose to  learn about one famous woman from among a group of displayed photographs, including former Prime Minister Golda Meir, Minister of Justice and Knesset Member Tzipi Livni, Olympic Medalist Yael Arad, and Madonna.  The participant then explained his or her choice and for what that particular woman was famous.  The group concluded the activity by agreeing that women make important contributions to society.

Celebrating Our Mothers: For the second activity, workers and staff recounted childhood  memories of their mothers, noting the important role that mothers play throughout our lives  and their influence on society as a whole.

Understanding Exclusion through Role-Playing: In order to understand more deeply the exclusion that women have historically experienced, the group participated in role-playing.  Half of the participants were free to do what they wanted (e.g., painting, putting together puzzles, chatting with friends, etc).  The other half of the group sat “on the sidelines”, pretending they were not allowed to choose what to do.  At the end of a short time period, the entire group sat together to discuss what had happened and what it means when a person is not allowed free choice in their activities.  Participants were able to make the connection between this feeling and the position of women prior to the modern era.  The participants then compared historic inequalities to choices women have today.

Honoring Women in Our Lives: While the women in the group were taking an art class where they created decorative shoulder bags, the men baked individual chocolate cakes.  Both the cakes and wallets made by the men in the OTC’s Retiree Program were presented to the women as a surprise gift.

A Great End to a Good Day: Topping off the celebrations were pampering for both the men and women  in the form of new hairdos, manicures and makeup, as well as massages, all done by professionals who donated their services.

Israel Elwyn’s Adult Day Centers focus on independence and work skills in pre-vocational programs for adults with significant support needs.  Physical, occupational and speech therapies are among the additional support services offered by Israel Elwyn.
