IE Residents Participate:

For 38 years, the International Arts and Crafts Festival in Jerusalem has been one of the high points of the summer for locals and tourists alike.  Taking place in the Hutzot HaYotzer Arts and Crafts Center, the Festival allows visitors to enjoy the sight of the Old City’s walls while viewing the handiwork of hundreds of artists from Israel and overseas and while enjoying daily performances featuring leading singers and entertainers.

This is the fourth year in which Israel Elwyn’s Supported Living Program’s Employment Division has been invited to participate.  The invitation followed a review by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services of the products to be displayed and sold, which had to meet the exacting criteria of good quality, handmade, and produced by individuals with disabilities.

Following a decision by the Residents’ Committee of the Supported Living Program, this was the first year in which residents have participated in the sale, which takes place late in the evening.  The Committee, which is composed of ten residents of the Supported Living Program, assisted by support staff, deals with a wide range of subjects that may be raised by any resident.

Residents worked alongside IE support staff to prepare the stand at Hutzot HaYotzer so that the goods would be displayed to best advantage.  Items for sale included wooden tables and chairs for children, footstools, boxes of all sizes, albums with pages of colorful recycled paper, placemats, herbs and plants in ceramic pots.  Throughout the sale, the residents explained about Israel Elwyn, their home and their work.  When asked what happens with the funds from the sales, they replied that the money is used to pay them and to cover the purchase of raw materials.

Many customers expressed their satisfaction with the products they had purchased in previous years and were pleased to buy new items this year.  The sister of one of the residents working in the booth happened to visit the booth and was thrilled to see her brother’s success.

The residents who participated in the sale continue to talk about their experiences, the positive feedback received from customers, and how much they enjoyed the chance to meet new people at the fair.

IE’s Supported Living Program is home to nearly 250 individuals with intellectual disabilities.  Each weekday morning residents work, providing them with the opportunity to earn a wage while honing existing skills and learning new ones.  The wide range of jobs from which the residents may choose includes ceramics, woodwork, recycled paper, indoor and outdoor gardening, factory production line (electrical accessories), and electronic equipment recycling.
