Employers Learn About Advantages of Employing People with Disabilities

L-r: Two employers and Rafik Halabi, Mayor of  Daliat El Karmel; Dr. Michal Wilf, Director of IE's  Haifa & North Israel Branch.

Early in April, an “Employers’ Evening” was held in Daliat El Karmel, the Druze city located just outside of Haifa, to introduce employers to the subject of employing people with disabilities.  This was a joint effort by the Haifa & Northern Israel Branch of Israel Elwyn (IE) together with Daliat El Karmel’s Social Services Department, the Ministry of Economy’s Employer Supports Center, and The Disabilities Association of Daliat El Karmel (NDA).  NDA is a nonprofit that was established in 2001 to improve quality of life for people with disabilities, advocate with them, provide enrichment activities, and promote common interests with other organizations.  NDA today works with half of Daliat El Karmel’s 600 persons with disabilities.  Israel Elwyn’s Beresin Occupational Training Center, from which the Haifa & Northern Israel Branch’s continuum of employment services is operated, is located in Haifa.

The purpose of the evening was to raise awareness among employers about including individuals with disabilities in the competitive job market.  The ten employers present come from a wide variety of fields:  bakeries, an events hall, a carpenter, an aluminum products factory, and a supermarket.

Daliat El Karmel’s Mayor, Mr. Rafik Halabi, greeted the participants, stating “People with disabilities deserve a high quality of life and equal treatment and services, just like any other person in our society.  We must see the individual in terms of his abilities and not the disability. If we look at him through his limitations, then we are limited.”  Mr. Hosam Halabi, Director of Daliat El Karmel’s Social Services Department, welcomed the attendees and noted his satisfaction with Israel Elwyn’s services to a group of service recipients who began working at a local greenhouse a year ago.

Mr. Michael Morag, Director of the Ministry of Economy’s Employer Supports Center, presented a lecture on “The Legislated Benefits and Rights of Employers of Individuals with Disabilities.”  Dr. Michal Wilf, Director of Israel Elwyn’s Haifa & Northern Israel Branch, described IE’s services and the guiding professional approach of IE’s Beresin Occupational Training Center, which includes creation of a personal employment plan based on the desires and aspirations of each service recipient.

The employers were pleased to have this additional information.  Some expressed interest in employing individuals with disabilities and since then, a worker with disabilities has been employed by the supermarket whose owner attended the Employers' Evening.
