Delegation from Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles Visits Israel Elwyn

Members of the two Jewish Federation of Los Angeles delegations pose during their IE visits

On the morning of October 22, delegations from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles visited two of Israel Elwyn's flagship programs:  Supported Employment and Transitions.  Both groups received explanations of Israel Elwyn's (IE) range of programs, from early intervention for toddlers through structured activities for retired workers with disabilities, a continuum of employment and supported living programs.

One delegation saw the Supported Employment Program in action at the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) in Jerusalem.  This program provides supports to over 1,000 adults with disabilities as they work at jobs in the community, including the Knesset, Supreme Court, high tech companies, offices, restaurants, hotels, factories, and stores.  The group had an opportunity to speak with a number of IE-supported employees – one person who works in the office of the Knesset Speaker, another who works in the Knesset restaurant and a person who works in the Knesset post office.  They expressed their pride at working in Israel’s seat of government and helping elected officials in their work.  The visitors were glad to see the extent of the Knesset’s dedication to the principle of inclusion.

The second delegation traveled to the Shafririm High School on Kibutz Givat Haim Ihud in Central Israel, where 30 students participate in IE’s Transitions program for high school students transitioning into the adult world.  After an explanation of the collaboration between the school and IE, teams of students and visitors played a game in which each team tried to match professions with different types of activity.  Some of the students then related their experiences in the program and how it is affecting their lives and the future they envision; this was followed by a lively question and answer session.  Both the students and the guests expressed their appreciation for the visit and the glimpse it gave each into the others’ world.

IE is proud to be the recipient of a three year grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles for its Supported Employment program, which provides supports to people with disabilities working in the competitive job market.  The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, together with the Ruderman Family Foundation, supports the National Self-Advocacy Project, a unique collaboration between Beit Issie Shapiro and Israel Elwyn designed to give people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to have their voices heard, to organize themselves and work to advance their own rights.  The goal of the project is to help people with intellectual disabilities gain dignity, independence, a more developed social network, and groundbreaking opportunities for leadership and innovation within their own community and society as a whole.
